Questions to ask your Mentor during a Mentor Hour

Questions to ask your Mentor

Booked a Mentor Hour? Congrats! Now’s the time to think about what you want out of the session. Are you looking for inspiration? A fresh perspective? Or some tips from someone who's been there and done it?

At She Mentors, we are all about shared experiences and collective knowledge, so ask as many questions as you like. If you have specific skills-related questions, we find it helpful to send them across to the Mentor before the session, so they have time to prepare.

In the meantime, here are some questions to you like to ask your Mentor to kick-start your session:

Great questions to ask a Mentor

  • How did you get to where you are today?
  • What challenges did you encounter along the way?
  • How was COVID for you?
  • What lessons have you learnt?
  • How did you land that job / business / promotion?
  • What tools and resources do you recommend for someone in my industry?
  • I’ve experienced X, what’s your perspective on that?
  • Can you take a look at X, any recommendations or ideas?
  • If you were in my shoes, how would you deal with X?
  • Do you know anyone in X industry that might be worth me reaching out to?
  • Who should my next Mentor Hour be with?

We strongly encourage our members to share their amazing stories and skills! But we ask our community to refrain from dishing out direct advice e.g. “Do this / Do that / Quit your job”. It’s important to remember that your Mentor may have lots of experience but at the end of the day, the most valuable thing they can offer is their knowledge and insight. They're here to help you along the way, rather than coach you.

Getting different perspectives

This platform facilitates a wonderful exchange of knowledge and support, so we encourage you to connect with as many different women as possible each month. Variety is the spice of life! Identify what you need and then try to gain those unique perspectives and ideas from as many different sources as possible. This is the key to helping you fuel your growth.

There’s a quote that we love: “Each person you meet is a new door to a different world”. Spending an hour with someone each month can really build those genuine relationships – not the superficial conversations lots of us have at networking events.

We encourage you to be honest, share your struggles and listen closely. Take notes, ask for recommendations and get tips on who to book an hour with next!

Please remember to...

Show up on time for your Mentor Hour

Don't keep your Mentor waiting. If you need to reschedule, let them know with plenty of time to spare. If you need to cancel, please visit Profile - Requests and 'cancel' your booking. This will enable our system to 'refund' both your hours so you can book someone else. We ask that you to only cancel when absolutely necessary and as a courtesy to your Mentor, send an email as well.

Take a photo of your Mentor Hour!

We love selfies! Don't forget to snap a pic or screenshot of your Zoom call together (command + shift + 4 on Mac) and share into our private Facebook group for your chance to win a free month’s membership! We pick a winner at the end of each month, so be descriptive and tell us what you learned from, and loved about, the session.

Build that relationship

Connect with your Mentor on LinkedIn and other social media platforms, and show your support. Tag them in a post to say thank you (please also tag @shementors so we can see your lovely pics) and make sure you stay in touch.
